Complementary Therapies

Alternative therapies can help to bolster overall health, relieve stress and improve your wellbeing. These therapies may not directly tie in to your chances of becoming pregnant, but they can significantly boost your personal welfare, making the fertility process easier to go through.

Improving overall health

Many complementary therapies offer support outside of your primary treatment course, helping you to feel more comfortable, calm and prepared. Patients may choose to add therapies like yoga, meditation and acupuncture to their overall fertility process.

Complementary therapies do not directly make it more likely that you will become pregnant, but instead work to boost your mental and emotional wellbeing by reducing stress and bolstering self-confidence. The improvements to your overall health can make fertility treatment more comfortable and give you a more positive outlook on the process.

Alternative therapy options

Individuals who include some complementary therapies as part of their fertility journey often feel calmer and more ready to go through the process. If you are interested in including some alternative therapies, you may consider the following:

  • Meditation: Designed to promote a deep sense of relaxation, meditation can help you to handle the different stressful aspects of fertility treatment. More relaxation naturally helps to reduce stress levels and keep you in a healthier mindset while trying to have a baby. Other benefits of meditation may include reduced blood pressure and reduced heart rate.
  • Acupuncture: Used primarily to reduce stress, acupuncture involves placing fine needles into specific body points. The process helps to stimulate blood flow and produce endorphins which relieve pain and stress. There are suggestions that acupuncture can also improve blood flow to the uterus, helping prepare it for implantation of an embryo.
  • Naturopathy: The underlying idea of naturopathy is to prevent any negative health conditions by improving overall health, rather than treating any issues after they appear. Naturopaths promote taking a holistic approach to health and wellbeing, improving aspects of daily life such as diet, exercise and stress management.
  • Yoga: Similar to meditation, yoga has positive stress-reduction effects, but it is also thought to improve reproductive health by toning important muscles and promoting blood circulation. Yoga employs many breathing techniques and relaxing movements designed to reduce stress levels and promote a healthy mindset.

Another very popular complementary therapy is the use of herbal medicines and remedies. Many of these can have powerful compounds in them, which can create significant hormonal reactions. While they can have some benefits, we recommend not using any herbal remedies without consulting with us first, and avoiding them completely while on any other medication.
