Genetic Testing

Having a baby involves many factors that you won’t always be able to see. Genetic testing can give you some insights into your own health and the health of your embryos, helping us understand what to expect when your baby is born and how we can ensure the safest outcomes.

Pre-Pregnancy Genetic Testing Melbourne

Should you undergo genetic testing for fertility?

The genetic information from both the egg and sperm used in making a baby is fundamental to how the baby will develop. Our focus is on helping you develop the healthiest baby possible, but there can be genetic factors at play that influence health. Abnormal genetics can prevent an embryo from properly implanting and developing, or lead to miscarriage. Unusual genetics may also lead to the birth of a child with some form of disability.

By undergoing some genetic testing and screening either prior to pregnancy or before an embryo is implanted in IVF treatment, we can help reduce the likelihood of these outcomes.

While anyone can benefit from some genetic testing before pregnancy, it is particularly recommended for patients who:

  • have experienced multiple unsuccessful IVF cycles;
  • have a family history of one or more genetic disorders; or
  • have experienced recurrent miscarriage.

Testing can give you valuable knowledge about your fertility health, and our specialists can help you make sense of it to give you the best chance of having a healthy baby.

Our Treatment Options

We offer a variety of genetic testing services designed to assess your likelihood of passing on any genetic conditions to your children. We can test you early in your fertility journey or while you are undergoing fertility treatment, working with you every step of the way.

PGT-M is used to check whether there are any specific mutations in an embryo’s genetics, typically when there is a known condition that runs in the family of one or both parents. We can check whether that condition appears present in the embryo prior to implantation.

Chromosomes carry all of an embryos’ genes, and aneuploidies are abnormalities in a cell’s number of chromosomes which can lead to negative pregnancy outcomes. PGT-A testing ensures that only embryos carrying the correct chromosomal number are transferred to the uterus during fertility treatment.

By testing your saliva or a blood sample in a simple procedure, we can screen for hundreds of potential genetic conditions and identify how likely you are to have a baby with different genetic conditions. We’ll support you with clear information and a comforting hand as you plan your next steps.

PGT-SR is used during IVF to assess embryos for structural chromosomal rearrangements, such as translocations or inversions. While these rearrangements don’t affect the health of the parents, they can increase the risk of miscarriage or health issues in their children. By examining a small sample of the embryo’s cells, PGT-SR ensures that only embryos with balanced chromosomal structures are selected for transfer, offering reassurance and enhancing the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
