With the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), rebates are provided across various fertility treatments, and with the Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN), additional rebates are available for those who go over their annual threshold. This means that when your out-of-pocket costs exceed your annual threshold, you can apply for additional rebates on eligible services.
The Medicare Safety Net begins at the start of each calendar year. If you exceed your threshold, Medicare may rebate a proportion of your upfront costs where hospital admittance isn’t required.
To be eligible for the Medicare rebate on treatments, you must have a valid referral letter from your GP, or a specialist gynaecologist or obstetrician. GP referrals are valid for 12 months, whilst referrals from specialists are only valid for 3 months. Both your name and your partners name (if applicable) are required to be on the referral letter, and your letter should be made out to your Fertility Specialist or Fertility Clinic.
Our Create Fertility Patient Liaison team will take you through the process. The easiest and quickest way to claim your rebates is via Medicare Electronic Claiming, saving you time while getting you your rebate as quickly as possible. To do this, your bank records will need to be registered with Medicare. Once your treatment cycle has been completed, our Create Fertility team will process your claim to Medicare on your behalf, and your rebate will be transferred directly from Medicare into your nominated bank account.
The Medicare Safety Net does not include hospital or day surgery services. This includes treatments like egg collection or embryo transfer. Treatments not covered also include Elective Egg Freezing, PRP, or Ovulation Induction, as well as storage of eggs, sperm or embryos. To see what treatments are covered, see our Costs page
