Fertility Health Check Melbourne

Would you benefit from a fertility check?

15% of reproductive-aged couples are affected by infertility, which can make having a baby more difficult, leading to anxiety and disappointment. Fortunately, we can help you understand why you haven’t been able to fall pregnant, using fertility testing and developing a treatment plan to try and make it happen.

While you are likely very excited to have a baby, many people will take months of trying before they are able to, or even longer. We recommend booking an appointment for a fertility test or just to chat with one of our specialists if you:

  • are under 35 and have been trying to fall pregnant for 12 months or more;
  • are over 35 and have been trying for six months or more;
  • have a medical condition that may impact on your fertility;
  • have known fertility concerns (such as polycystic ovarian syndrome) or
  • are single or in a relationship and considering your options for the future.

There are many male and female factors that affect fertility. We use different tests and examinations to assess as many as we can, helping you have the best chance of overcoming any obstacles and falling pregnant.

What does a fertility assessment involve?

Testing your fertility health begins with a review of your medical history and your overall health levels. This also includes understanding how long you have been trying to conceive and your unique lifestyle factors, as these can have an influence on your likelihood of falling pregnant. Women will be asked about their menstrual cycle and whether they have irregular periods.

All of this information is used by our specialists to help give you the best chance of having a baby, either through early non-invasive methods or more complex treatments.

Fertility assessment for women

A female fertility test often involves blood tests to measure important reproductive hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), oestrogen, and progesterone. Another main blood test is called the anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) test, which predicts the number of eggs still remaining in a woman’s ovaries.

A fertility specialist may also request for you to undergo a pelvic ultrasound to observe the health of your anatomy (including the uterine cavity, fallopian tubes, and the presence of ovarian cysts).

Fertility assessment for men

Male fertility tests may include a semen analysis that examines the number, movement, and shape of sperm to ensure they’re healthy. A fertility specialist may also request that men undergo some blood tests or an ultrasound scan to check for any hidden medical conditions or obstructions to conception.

Factors that affect fertility

While it is commonly known that fertility decreases as people age, there are a number of other lifestyle factors that may affect fertility and should be considered. Making positive lifestyle changes while trying can improve your chances of conceiving and having a successful pregnancy.

Weight: Being in a healthy weight range can improve overall health and prevent hormonal imbalances. Weight can negatively affect egg and sperm quality, but making some lifestyle changes can help people achieve a healthier weight.

Diet: Incorporating the five healthy food groups can create a well-balanced diet, which leads to more vitamins and minerals being consumed. People trying to conceive should reduce foods high in added sugars. Women, in particular, should supplement their diet with folate when they are trying to get pregnant.

Alcohol and tobacco: Smoking and excessive drinking can affect reproductive health and increase the risk of birth abnormalities and other complications. While trying to fall pregnant, women should limit alcohol intake.

Alternative assessments

A fertility specialist will take great care in assessing as many different factors that affect fertility as possible. From basic health checks to more complex genetic testing, our team learns every aspect to find the best path to pregnancy. We then create tailored treatment plans based on whether male infertility or female infertility (or a combination) is the root cause behind your difficulty conceiving.

Tracking ovulation is an important process when trying for a baby. Ovulation induction is a minimally invasive treatment that involves taking medication in the form of tablets or a fine needle injection to induce ovulation and help women have more regular menstrual cycles.

Using a simple blood test, we can measure your level of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH), which tells us how many eggs you still have in your ovaries, known as your ‘ovarian reserve’. This helps us understand your level of fertility health relative to the average for your age.

By testing your saliva or a blood sample in a simple procedure, we can screen for hundreds of potential genetic abnormalities and identify how likely you are to have a baby with different genetic conditions. We’ll support you with clear information and a comforting hand as you plan your next steps.
