Having a baby through egg donation

There are many reasons why couples, as well as single women, may need an egg donor to help create their family.

Finding the right information can be overwhelming, therefore we have put together some useful information to help you better understand the process, rules and regulations.

At Create Fertility, we make the time to ensure you understand all the requirements and regulations associated with using an egg donor.

Why egg donors are necessary

There are a number of reasons why an egg donor may help a couple have a baby. Some of these include:

Women who are unable to produce eggs due to age, hormones or early menopause

CF icon

Women who have poor egg quality, which can lead to recurrent miscarriages

CF icon

Women with a high risk of passing on genetic conditions

CF icon

People affected by serious illnesses, notably cancer treatments (as these can cause permanent damage)

CF icon

Same-sex male couples or gender-diverse couples with the aid of a surrogate

Types of egg donors

CF icon

Known egg donor

This is when you know the identity of your egg donor. They can be an acquaintance, a family member or a friend who has agreed to donate eggs to help you start a family.

Clinic-recruited egg donor

This is when the egg donor is recruited through the clinic. Through this donor approach, you will not know the identity of the egg donor.

Finding an egg donor

To understand how you can find an egg donor, we recommend visiting the Department of Health website via this link. They have extensive information on the ins and outs of donor conception.

For those who are open about their fertility journey, you may feel comfortable talking to your family and friends and consider asking if they would be willing to be an egg donor.

There are online forums that are moderated and require approval before joining to ensure rules and regulations are being followed. These forums are created so that genuine people can connect.

We also suggest having a conversation with your fertility specialist at Create Fertility, as they may be able to assist with a clinic-recruited egg donor.

Whether you’re using an egg donated by a family member, friend, or acquaintance, we require all parties involved to undergo counselling before any treatment is finalised.

The egg donation process for a known egg donor

Once you have found your egg donor, please contact us to arrange an appointment with one of our fertility specialists.

  1. You will go through a fertility health check, where we’ll do some tests, including blood, and a pelvic exam.
  2. You’ll meet with one of our fertility specialists, who will go through your test results with you.
  3. If your fertility health check is okay, you’ll meet with our Donor Coordinator to discuss our program and the steps to choose your donor.
  4. Next, you will be required to attend a counselling appointment, and if you have a partner, they will need to attend.
  5. Your egg donor will undergo an egg collection procedure. These eggs will be fertilised using either your partner’s or donated sperm and then frozen for later use.
  6. You’ll have a follow-up appointment with one of our fertility specialists to go through the treatment and procedure.
  7. And finally, you’ll proceed with your IVF treatment in the hopes of creating a pregnancy.

The donation process for clinic-recruited egg donors is slightly different to what is outlined above. If you would like to learn more about this, please feel free to contact our team at Create Fertility.

Considerations to note before using donor eggs

Creating a family of your own may be your lifelong dream and the happiest moment of your life. However, there are still considerations that need to be taken into account.

Your partner

If you have a partner, it's crucial that they are included in the decision, understand the process and the after-effects of using donor eggs. At Create Fertility, we require both you and your partner to attend counselling sessions. During this time, you both have the opportunity to discuss the ins and outs, ask questions and understand the long and short-term implications involved to ensure you both have a full appreciation of what it means to use an egg donor.

Emotional considerations

The fertility journey can be an emotional rollercoaster. It's important to consider how using an egg donor can affect you emotionally, as well as your partner and family. Some of these feelings include elation, gratitude, worry, grief, and accomplishment. To finally be able to create a family of your own is a wonderful gift and a lifelong commitment.

CF icon

Donors legal responsibilities

We strongly suggest you seek legal advice to navigate expectations, boundaries, and the involvement of the donor and all other interested parties before proceeding with your donor.

CF icon

Donor payments

It's important to note that, in Victoria, donating eggs is an altruistic act. However, clinic-recruited egg donors can have some of their time compensated, with the amount needing to be agreed upon with the clinic prior to commencing the donation process.

If you would like more information regarding using an egg donor, please contact our Donor Coordinator on 03 9873 6789 or via email to donation@createfertility.com.au.
