Egg Freezing

It’s less likely that women will be able to fall pregnant as they age, but modern technology allows them to freeze eggs and prolong their ability to try for a baby. This can help provide peace of mind to women who would love to start a family but are not currently able to.

Egg Freezing Melbourne

When should you freeze your eggs?

A woman’s most fertile years are her early to mid-twenties, after which the quality of her fertility naturally declines. This speeds up once women reach 35 years old, but modern science ensures that women can prolong their fertility by freezing and storing some of their eggs to be used at a later time.

Freezing your eggs may be a helpful option for circumstances including:

  • if you would like to have a baby one day but are not ready or in a position to right now
  • if you are about to undergo a major surgery or medical treatment that may affect your ability to produce healthy eggs (such as radiation or chemotherapy)
  • if you have health concerns that may threaten your fertility
  • if you are unsure about having kids but would like to keep the option open

While males can produce sperm throughout their lives, women are born with a limited number of eggs which naturally reduce as they age. Unfortunately, this decline happens as part of the natural course of life. Whether a woman is actively trying to conceive or using hormonal contraception to avoid conceiving, her eggs will still slowly dwindle and, by the time she is in her 30s, only around 10% of her eggs will remain. Freezing eggs can ensure that you still have viable fertility even as your natural number of eggs with reproductive potential decreases.

Your chances of successfully becoming pregnant with your frozen eggs will be based on the age you were when they were retrieved and frozen, so the younger you are at your elective egg freezing procedure, the better. This ensures you can still have a great chance of becoming pregnant even as you get older.

Our egg freezing process

In a typical menstrual cycle, only one egg makes it through the ovulatory process to be released. Many other eggs may contend to become the ‘dominant’ one that ends up being released, but those that do not get released will unfortunately die off. In the process of egg freezing, instead of just retrieving one at a time, you will undergo a hormonal stimulation treatment which will help stimulate your ovaries to produce more. When this happens, instead of the extra eggs dying off, they can be retrieved and frozen for use in fertility treatments.

A typical egg freezing treatment cycle looks like this:

  1. Hormone Stimulation: You take hormone medication for around 2 weeks to stimulate your ovaries, which allows more eggs to mature and be retrieved at one time. Medication is often an injection under the skin, and you will be monitored throughout the process with ultrasounds and blood tests to ensure healthy development.
  2. Egg Collection: When your eggs have matured, you will have a hospital visit where you will be put to sleep and your eggs will be collected. Eggs are extracted vaginally using an ultrasound-guided probe with a fine needle and in the least invasive way possible. This procedure typically takes 10 to 15 minutes. Patients then relax in recovery afterward to ensure they are healthy and well before they leave.
  3. Egg Preservation: After collection, your eggs will immediately be assessed for maturity in our Melbourne lab. Suitably mature eggs will be immersed in special fluids that protect them during the freezing process. They are then frozen using liquid nitrogen in a quick and very safe process known as egg vitrification.

In an egg freezing cycle, the number of eggs collected will depend on your health, age, and your body’s response to the stimulation treatment. Some women may need to undergo multiple stimulation treatment cycles to give themselves a higher chance of becoming pregnant, depending on their ovarian reserve.

Risks Associated with Egg Freezing

Associated risks of egg collection and freezing

Women can have an excessive response to the stimulation treatment, which can develop into Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). Bleeding and infection or damage to an internal organ are also possible, but rare. If any complications do occur, we will help you understand and manage the treatment, prioritising your health and comfort as much as possible.

While egg freezing can often prolong your ability to become pregnant, it is unfortunately not a sure thing. In some situations, we may be unable to retrieve any suitable eggs, some may fail to survive the freezing and thawing process, and others may develop into embryos but not result in pregnancy. We know this would feel extremely difficult, and we are always there to work with you through it.

Storing your frozen eggs

Under current Victorian law, we are allowed to keep your frozen eggs for up to 10 years from when you sign your initial consent. This can be extended in some circumstances, including if there is a reasonable risk of you becoming prematurely infertile due to a medical condition or procedure. Our Melbourne specialists can help you identify whether you are eligible for further storage and how to go about it. We promise to never discard your eggs without receiving your consent or attempting to make contact with you first.

Using your frozen eggs

When you feel ready to try and get pregnant, our Melbourne fertility specialists will help you through the fertilisation and embryo transfer process. Your eggs will be thawed to a safe temperature, then injected and fertilised with either your partner’s or donor sperm. Our goal is to create a healthy embryo which is then transferred to your uterus.

It is important to understand that freezing your eggs does not guarantee you will be able to have a baby. While we truly wish we could guarantee fertilisation in all of our fertility treatments, we unfortunately cannot, but we make every effort possible to give you the best chance of becoming pregnant and having a baby.

FAQs about egg freezing

Treatment is partially covered by Medicare in cases of medical egg freezing. These are situations where patients have been diagnosed with a medical condition or are undergoing a treatment that may impact their current or future fertility, and preservation is important. In these situations, patients may be eligible for an egg freezing Medicare rebate. Medicare does not offer any cover for elective egg freezing.

The choice between egg and embryo freezing depends on your individual circumstances and goals. Both allow women to preserve their options for the future, but they each have distinct advantages and considerations. Embryos are created when an egg and sperm are fertilised and frozen, while egg freezing allows you to create embryos later in life when you are ready (with either a partner or donor sperm). Egg freezing may be considered a more accessible option, as it can be pursued without immediate plans for growing a family and offers more flexibility in planning a pregnancy than embryo freezing. Both are useful options for family planning. It is important to look over all your options and talk through them with our egg freezing Melbourne clinic experts to determine which is most suitable for you.

When it comes to success rates, there are several factors to take into consideration, including the age of the patient when eggs were retrieved; the quality of eggs and sperm used within treatment; the number of eggs that were retrieved and frozen; and any underlying health or fertility issues. Generally, the younger you are when eggs are retrieved, the higher the chances of success. There are typically 10 eggs preserved in a standard cycle of freezing and, in most cases, the majority of these will survive the thawing process and have an attempt at fertilisation. In short, the chances of achieving a successful pregnancy through IVF treatment with frozen eggs are comparable to using ‘fresh’ eggs as the likelihood varies depending on the age of the egg.

Freezing your eggs involves several steps — ovarian stimulation, retrieval, and preservation. During stimulation, the hormone injections may cause some minor pain but it is likely to be minimal. The egg retrieval procedure should be painless, as it is conducted under anaesthesia, but there may be some discomfort after waking up including cramping, soreness, and spotting. Pain relief and heat pads should be able to reduce any discomfort.

To ensure that the eggs we retrieve are as healthy as possible, it is important to be well-rested, avoid smoking or drinking alcohol, and continue exercising. Keeping yourself in good health will improve your chances of having success through egg freezing. Additionally, it is useful to consider whether you will need help from a partner or support person through the process, particularly for administering the hormone stimulation injections.

The overall cost of freezing eggs will depend on several factors, including the costs of medications and ongoing storage fees as well as the regular cycle fee. You can find out more about our estimated out-of-pocket Melbourne egg freezing costs here.

The anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) test can be used to estimate how many eggs you have remaining in your ovaries, using a sample of your blood. This provides a relative gauge of your fertility but, unfortunately, cannot predict how healthy your remaining eggs are or whether you will be able to fall pregnant.
