Platelet-rich plasma infusions to the uterus can improve pregnancy outcomes for women undergoing assisted reproduction.
An intrauterine infusion is a treatment that focuses on issues surrounding the endometrial lining. By infusing the lining with autologous platelet-rich plasma, it can improve the endometrial thickness and receptivity to embryo implantation which are fundamental to the development of a successful clinical pregnancy outcome.
This treatment is commonly used for women who have been through multiple IVF cycles and, unfortunately, been unable to fall pregnant. It is also typically recommended for women who have a refractory thin endometrium (uterine lining), recurrent pregnancy loss, and those with a history of repeated implantation failure (a condition known as Recurrent Implantation Failure, or RIF).
We'll take a sample of blood from your arm - the same way we would for a standard blood test.
Your blood will be taken to our onsite lab where it will be put into a centrifuge and spun to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the red blood cells. This will take about 15 minutes.
Our team will review your blood sample and purify the platelet-rich plasma ready for treatment.
The intrauterine infusion of PRP is minimally invasive and will be done by your specialist. It involves a thin catheter being inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity.
After your platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment is complete, you’ll need to stay in a reclined position for 10 minutes before being allowed to go home. Most people are able to return to their usual activities straight away.
Like with any treatment, there are some risks to be aware of. However, PRP is largely a safe procedure performed via minimally invasive techniques that carries a minimum risk to you.
You may experience some tenderness post-procedure, but this generally subsides within a few days. Slight vaginal bleeding may occur, and there is less than 1% chance of developing a local infection.
We always recommend resting after any procedure to aid with a healthy recovery.
This procedure should not be performed on people who have a known blood disorder, a history of chronic infections, or severe systemic or metabolic disorders. You should also not receive this treatment if you’re taking any blood thinning medication (such as clexane or aspirin) or oral corticosteroids (such as predisolone). Your specialist will be able to provide further advice.
