A Win for IVF in Australia

Dr Haider Najjar, a Fertility Specialist at Create Fertility, was recently featured in the Herald Sun, and on Channel 7’s ‘Sunrise’ and Channel 9’s ‘Today’, as part of a story regarding a new, innovative fertility treatment.

The procedure involves Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), which contains a high concentration of platelets, that exhibit a natural growth factor. In the context of sport and athletes, PRP is used to stimulate and speed up healing in damaged joints and tissues. In the world of fertility, it has commonly been used to improve the receptivity of the uterine lining prior to embryo transfer.

The media story revealed that Create Fertility is the first Victorian fertility clinic to conduct an ovarian PRP procedure, which has the potential to reactivate the ovaries when the patient has low egg reserves. This involves directly injecting the PRP into the ovaries through laparoscopic techniques or via minimally invasive surgery under ultrasound guidance in order to possibly improve the patient’s ability to produce more eggs.

Dr Haider notes “our aim was to reactivate the ovaries, and on this occasion, we’ve had success, making our patient’s dreams come true.”

With regards to the adoption of this procedure, Dr Haider acknowledges that “at this stage, [himself] and [his] colleagues at Create Fertility are the only unit in Victoria, however [he] hopes other units will step forward and start doing this and we all can serve the community”.
