Semen Analysis Melbourne

A vital step in your fertility journey

If you have been trying to conceive without success or if you are simply looking to understand your reproductive health, a sperm test may offer the clarity you need. Male reproductive health plays a role in almost half of all fertility cases, and assessing sperm health early may make a significant difference in your journey to parenthood.

At Create Fertility, we understand that undergoing semen analysis may feel daunting, but this is a common, simple, and important test many men undergo that aims to provide invaluable insights.

Comprehensive male fertility testing at Create Fertility

A semen analysis, also called a sperm test, is typically the first method used to assess male fertility. It evaluates several factors that impact your ability to conceive, including:

  • Sperm count
  • Sperm motility (movement)
  • Sperm morphology (shape)
  • Overall sperm quality
  • Sperm concentration
  • Sperm DNA fragmentation
  • Anti sperm antibodies
  • Presence of other abnormalities that may affect sperm production

While semen analysis is a key factor in male fertility, at Create Fertility, we go beyond basic testing. Instead, we take a holistic view of your reproductive health, helping you understand the results and explore personalised options.

Whether your semen sample reveals a low sperm count, reduced motility, signs of DNA damage, or anything else affecting your sperm health, our aim is to help you navigate the next steps.

The potential benefits of semen analysis

Male fertility tests, such as semen analysis, may assist you with:

1. Getting answers sooner

A semen analysis has the potential to quickly reveal whether something in your semen sample may be affecting your chances of conceiving.

2. Avoiding unnecessary delays

Understanding any potential issues sooner rather than later means you may be able to take action and explore treatment options faster.

3. Tailoring your next steps

Semen samples give answers as to the most appropriate approach, whether that looks like lifestyle changes, fertility treatment, or further testing.

4. Improving your chances of conceiving naturally

While there are no guarantees, if your sperm quality needs improvement, you may find that making changes to your diet, exercise, and overall health may improve your chances of conceiving.

Your sperm test: questions answered

When you have an appointment for semen analysis, we will provide you with all the information you will need to know. Generally, preparation requires avoiding masturbation and ejaculation for two to seven days before the test.

Several factors may affect sperm production, including smoking, drug use, excess weight, poor diet, stress, and underlying medical conditions such as undescended testes.

A normal sperm count is generally considered to be 15 million sperm per millilitre or more. Lower counts may indicate male infertility, but further testing is usually required to assess fertility potential.

Male factor infertility may reduce the chances of the sperm reaching and fertilising the egg. It may be due to low sperm count, poor motility, or DNA fragmentation.

If there is no sperm present in your sample (azoospermia), we may recommend further testing, such as hormonal assessments or a testicular biopsy, to explore the cause and potential options for treatment.

In many cases, yes. A testicular biopsy aims to detect whether individual sperm are still being produced in the testicles and may sometimes be retrieved directly for use in assisted fertility treatments such as IVF.

In many cases, fertility treatments like IVF may assist even when sperm motility or morphology is below optimal levels. Your doctor will help to determine the most appropriate course of action based on your individual sperm analysis.
