Take control of your fertility journey with ovulation cycle tracking for natural conception.
When trying to fall pregnant, getting the timing right for when you and your partner have sex is essential – yet many couples get it wrong.
The most fertile time in a typical menstrual cycle – known as the fertile window – is the days leading up to ovulation, just before the egg is released. After ovulation, the egg will only survive for 24 hours. Meanwhile, sperm retain fertilising capability for two to three days in the fallopian tubes. This is why it’s recommended that couples have sex every two days throughout the fertile window, as it means that sperm will be ready and waiting for the egg when the woman ovulates.
If you’re coordinating sex on your ovulation date, you’re most likely missing your fertile window (and your opportunity to conceive for that month).
Ovulation tracking is a simple process that can help women to identify the days they are most fertile. This is achieved by tracking the hormone cycle to predict when ovulation will occur.
Ovulation is triggered by a surge of hormones from the pituitary gland, known as luteinising hormone. This usually occurs about 24 hours before ovulation.
Some simple blood tests and ultrasound scans can detect this hormone surge, allowing us to pinpoint the ideal time for you to have sex and give you the best chance at conceiving naturally.
There are many reasons why a woman or couple may like to pursue ovulation tracking as a part of their fertility journey.
Women with regular menstrual cycles who have tried unsuccessfully to conceive for a few months and do not want to undergo fertility investigations just yet
Women who have irregular periods (as a result of PCOS, for example), which makes the timing of sex difficult to determine
Women who want to have a better understanding of their natural cycle
Women can track ovulation themselves at home using a variety of methods, including basal body temperature (BBT), cervical mucus, and home ovulation kits.
Body temperature and cervical mucus can easily be missed, so they are not entirely reliable. While there is nothing wrong with using over-the-counter ovulation tests, it’s important to keep in mind that they’re not as accurate as in-clinic tracking because they only measure the luteinising hormone.
Clinic ovulation tracking measures the quantity of oestrogen, progesterone, and luteinising hormones present throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle, which enables our specialists to anticipate ovulation earlier. We then use ultrasounds to confirm that follicles are actually developing.
Our fertility specialist will help you understand your results, provide you with professional advice, and identify potential problems sooner.
One in six couples find that it takes longer than expected to fall pregnant. For some people, addressing infertility can be as simple as correcting the timing of sex to better coincide with the woman’s fertile window.
Ovulation tracking can also be useful in identifying menstrual cycle irregularities, which could be an indication of underlying fertility issues, such as anovulation (a lack of ovulation) or hormonal imbalances. If this is the case, you’re already in the right place to seek further advice.
